In a coordinated operation across four German states, authorities have detained five teenagers, aged between 14 and 18, suspected of belonging to a far-right terrorist organization known as the 'Last Wave of Defense.' The group, allegedly founded in April 2024, is accused of planning attacks on migrants, political opponents, and refugee shelters, with the aim of destabilizing Germany's democratic system.

The Federal Prosecutor's Office reported that raids were conducted in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Brandenburg, Hessen, and Thüringen, targeting 13 different locations. The suspects are facing charges including aiding and abetting a terrorist organization, arson, and attempted murder. Among the alleged crimes are an arson attack on a cultural center in Brandenburg and plans to assault a refugee camp.

German Justice Minister Stefanie Hubig highlighted the alarming fact that all suspects were minors at the time the terrorist group was established. 'This is a warning sign and shows that right-wing extremist terrorism knows no age,' Hubig stated, underscoring the concerning trend of youth involvement in extremist activities.

The operation involved over 220 police officers from federal and state forces, reflecting the seriousness with which German authorities are treating the threat of far-right extremism. The arrests come amid a reported 40% increase in politically motivated crimes in Germany last year, nearly half of which were driven by far-right ideologies. The case has sparked a broader discussion on the rise of extremism among young people and the challenges it poses to national security.
