German television institution 'Tatort' is undergoing a significant cast change in its popular Münster series. After 23 years portraying prosecutor Wilhelmine Klemm, actress Mechthild Großmann is departing the long-running crime drama. The 76-year-old actress, who became a audience favorite through her chain-smoking character, will make her final appearance in 2025.
Lou Strenger, a 33-year-old actress from Ludwigsburg, has been selected to fill the vacancy. Strenger will take on the role of prosecutor Nikola König, bringing fresh energy to the dynamic between main characters Professor Boerne (Jan Josef Liefers) and Chief Inspector Thiel (Axel Prahl). The casting decision follows Strenger's successful 2023 trial appearance in the Cologne 'Tatort' series, which convinced producers of her suitability for the Münster team.
The transition will occur gradually, with Strenger initially appearing as an interim prosecutor in the upcoming episode titled 'Maskerade.' Production for this case is already underway in Münster and Cologne. The ARD network acknowledged the challenge of replacing such an established character, stating that 'such an institution cannot be replaced immediately.'
Strenger brings substantial theatrical experience to the role, having performed on numerous stages after studying in Leipzig. She gained screen recognition through her 2019 appearance alongside Tom Schilling in the biopic 'Brecht.' Meanwhile, Großmann plans to continue her career in theater and musical readings, thanking her colleagues and fans for their long-standing support of her 'Tatort' tenure.
