Pistorius Urges Global Support for UN Peacekeeping Efforts

14-05-2025

At the opening of an international conference in Berlin, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius called for increased support for United Nations peacekeeping missions. Highlighting the importance of modern technology, Pistorius suggested that unmanned aerial vehicles or drones could significantly benefit UN peacekeeping operations. The conference, attended by representatives from over 130 countries, aims to secure concrete commitments to bolster the foundation of UN peacekeeping efforts.

Pistorius emphasized the need for achievable goals within the mandates of these missions, alongside the necessary tools and capabilities to meet them. "UN peacekeeping missions must be adequately equipped," he stated, pointing to the upcoming donor round as a critical opportunity for both large and small states to fulfill their financial, political, and operational commitments.

The German Defense Minister expressed strong belief in the legitimacy, effectiveness, and cost-efficiency of UN peacekeeping missions as instruments of international crisis management. "They have protected lives, supported political processes, and helped restore stability after violence," Pistorius remarked, underscoring the collective responsibility to preserve and strengthen these missions.

With UN Secretary-General António Guterres in attendance, the Berlin conference represents a pivotal moment for international cooperation on peacekeeping. The gathering seeks not only to address immediate needs but also to chart a sustainable path forward for UN missions worldwide, ensuring they remain a cornerstone of global peace and security efforts.
