Helmut Thoma, a seminal figure in the development of German-language private television, has passed away at the age of 86 in his hometown of Vienna. Thoma, who was instrumental in the founding and success of RTL, one of Germany's leading private broadcasters, leaves behind a legacy that reshaped the television landscape in Germany and beyond.
Thoma's career in media began at ORF, where he led the legal department before moving to Radio Luxemburg. It was there that he played a pivotal role in the launch of RTLplus in 1984, quickly turning it into Germany's most successful private television channel. His innovative approach to programming, focusing on a younger audience and advertising-friendly content, set new standards for the industry.
Despite facing criticism for the perceived lowbrow nature of some programming under his leadership, Thoma remained unapologetic, famously quipping, 'In the shallow, at least you can't drown.' His strategies, however controversial, proved successful, making RTL a dominant force in European television by the 1990s.
Thoma's contributions to the media industry were recognized with numerous awards, including the title of 'Media Man of the Year' in 1989. His passing marks the end of an era for private television, but his influence on the medium will undoubtedly endure. Thoma is survived by his wife, Danièle, and his son, Harald.
